Casco Bay has so many islands they were named the Calendar Islands, after a legend that said there were 365 of them. The actual count comes to 136, but the myriad of coves, a prime estuary, and Maine’s largest city more than suffice for the difference.
The abundance of beauty and privacy makes these Casco Bay, Maine, vacation rentals special. Sailing, sunbathing, sea kayaking and bird watching top many people’s to-do lists here. With so many nooks and crannies, the bay also features seven lighthouses.
When you feel the need for big city amenities, head into Portland. Take a tour of The Shipyard Brewery or the Cold River Vodka distillery, both of which include a tasting afterward. For something more family-oriented, visit the Children’s Museum of Maine. The downtown district has plenty of shopping, eating, people-watching and historic architecture.
