The secret is out about the town of Bend and the Deschutes National Forest. If you’re looking for a fun, mid-sized town and an uncrowded wilderness setting, check out these Central Cascades, Oregon, vacation rentals.
Bend used to be a quiet college town, home of the University of Oregon in Central Oregon. Over the years, however, the well-preserved downtown district, profusion of sunny days and unlimited recreation opportunities has drawn artists, adventurers, retirees and California refugees. If you go, make sure to eat at Deschutes Brewing Company, one of the most popular microbreweries in the area.
While most people go search for adventure in the Deschutes National Forest, the desert below also holds many treasures. Unlike Eastern Oregon, which is famous for wet days, Central and Western Oregon sit in the rain shadow of the Cascades, leaving them with more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Smith Rock State Park is a great place to explore the sagebrush and canyons.
