Forget your notions of rainy Seattle. Central Washington has a dry, sunny climate thanks to the rain shadow effect. Those beautiful surrounding mountains suck the rain from the storms, leaving the roofs of many Central Washington vacation rentals dry while the local ski areas get hammered with fresh powder.
The Cascade Range and Wenatchee Mountains have classic alpine scenery, while down in the “lowlands” of the Columbia basin, dazzling wildflower meadows lie interspersed with fruit orchards and fields of hops, one of the main ingredients in beer.
Speaking of beer, Central Washington has plenty of the microbreweries that have made the Pacific Northwest so famous. A visit to one could be the perfect way to end a day of fishing, golf or sightseeing. Don’t forget to visit the Columbia River, which has cut a deep and scenic gorge into the land.
