They used to call this the “Pineapple Island,” because Dole owned nearly the entire place for a pineapple plantation. It should be no surprise that Linai, Hawaii, vacation rentals are often “plantation-style” homes – low slung beach homes evocative of the American bungalow. Most of these homes are newer, luxury versions of the old style, however. Today, people come for the sandy beaches, but also for Shipwreck Beach, a treacherous stretch of coast that has claimed many ships. You can still see the Liberty, which was actually sunk purposefully, stranded on a shallow reef.
