On an island known for being mellow, many consider Negril to be more laid back than Montego Bay, the other Jamaican resort town. Some credit the hippies who came here in the 1960s. Others cite the zoning law that prohibits any buildings taller than the tallest palm. Spend some time in a Negril vacation rental, and you’ll be too relaxed to care.
This area originally attracted travelers for a seven-mile-long stretch of beach, one of the longest in the Caribbean. Charter a trip to a designated marine park with Negril Scuba Centre, a longtime fixture in diving community, or visit the Royal Palm Reserve, a wetlands with namesake palms found nowhere else in the world. Lighthouse buffs will appreciate the historic Negril Lighthouse, which is the tallest building in town at only 66 feet.
