In fact, many of the visitors of Almyrida return year after year, which creates a friendly, familiar atmosphere.
Plaka is situated on the top of the hill overlooking the bay of Almyrida. The center of the village with the typical architecture of Apokoronas has remained unchanged in the last years. All around it though many new houses have been built, serving as summer or even all-year-round domiciles to a great number of crete lovers. If your stay coincides with the greek orthodox easter, take the chance to participate in the mass of the Holy Week. If you are there in July don't miss the 'Plakiana' feast, to honour Mihalis Papadakis, a great cretan lyra player, originating from Plaka.
Chania
Chania is a beautiful city of 60.000 inhabitants. The area was inhabited since the ancient years, when the city had the name 'Kydonia'. Since then Chania went through a turbulent history, which has left its marks in the charming mixture of venetian, oriental, jewish and greek architecture. The old harbour, the lighthouse, the fountains and the narrow streets are a perfect set for a stroll. There are plenty of original museums to visit, an impressive city-market to buy cheese, olive-oil, soap and all the local produce. Chania is a vivid city with a strong cultural life. In the summer time there are almost every day concerts by greek and international artists in the open theater near the harbour and very often smaller events in the cafes, bars and tavernas of the old city.
