Competa is a traditional Andalusian village nestling in the foothills of the Sierra de Almijara mountains close to the national park, About 18km inland from the coast and approximately 45-50 minutes drive from Malaga International Airport or 1 hr 45 from Granada (cheap flights with Ryanair!). This is ideal walking country with walks available into the countryside. There are numerous fiestas throughout the year celebrating the various saints of the village. Two of these to note are the Semana Santa (Easter week) and the Noche del Vino (wine festival in August) The attractive beach resort of Nerja and the beautiful Burriana beach and the Cuevas de Nerja (stunning underground caves) are about 25 minutes drive away. The historic city of Granada and the famous Alhambra Palace can be reached within 1.5 hours. Marbella 1.5 hours and for cheap cigarettes and alcohol Gibraltar is only 2 hours away.

The Village Competa is a genuine working Spanish village with a lively atmosphere, friendly people and plenty of traditional restaurants, bars and shops providing all the amenities necessary for a relaxing holiday. With its moorish roots, the village has remained relatively unchanged over the years and comprises of pretty whitewashed village houses and quirky maze like streets, many of which are too narrow for cars. At the centre of the village is the main square the Plaza Almijara a great place to sit out, people watch and enjoy a drink or a meal. There are a number of excellent bars and restaurants to choose from including regional Spanish cooking and other European favorites. Restaurant bookings can be made prior to your arrival. This is advised for the more popular restaurants during peak season.


Local Facilities The local market selling fruit, vegetables, arts/crafts is held every Saturday in the lower square. The village also has a number of small supermarkets and grocery shops providing all day to day items and superb local produce such as honey and wine. Please note most shops close on Sundays however restaurants and bars are open all day. There is also an Internet cafe, an English language DVD/video rental shop, Internet cafe and a number of art galleries and craft shops to explore. Recommended eateries are: Oscars, Cotijo Paco and Casa Posado (excellent tapas). Typical cost of a substantial tapas meal with wine around 25 euros for two. Good wine can be found in La Bodega (try the Serrano ham!) and Museo del Vino. Wine tasting is also close by at the Jarel winery.


Pool The pool at the Balcon de Competa hotel is available to use for a small charge (6 euros). The hotel also boasts a pool bar with amazing views and a good restaurant (BBQ on Saturday nights).


Golf Information Golf courses all along the coast. The Costa del Sol is also know as the 'Costa del Golf'!
