Location Type: Beach, Mountain, Near the Ocean, Waterfront
Nearest Airport: Golfito 5 Miles
Car: Not Necessary
Area Description: The quaint "Banana Town" of Golfito was originally developed as the historical headquarters of the United Fruit Company in the 1930s and 1940s. Located just north of Panama on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, Chiquita and Dole choose this incredible bay as the stage for loading ships and exporting their products. They carved a railroad in along the jungle to bring in the goods and built a town that would support their industry. Since their departure in the 1980's the railroad was removed and the tracks converted to create our a small "one street town". Surrounded by lush, tropical reserve property and pristine jungle on every side, the natural backdrop is breath taking. The jungles behind are full of birds, animals, tropical fruits, trails and an abundance of pre-Columbian history as this bay was home to one of Costa Rica's Indigenous fishing communities.

Golfito Bay is located within the larger Golfo Dulce, and separated from the open Pacific Coast by the famous Osa Peninsula. Frequent ferry boats cross the Golfo Dulce from Golfito to Puerto Jimenez, which is the primary access point for the Osa Peninsula and the splendid Corcovado National Park, one of the few remaining sizeable areas of lowland tropical rainforest in the world. The beaches in the region are some of the most beautiful in the country. Calm water provides for many peaceful tourist activities. The town offers small marinas, yachting and boating services, sportfishing, and a destination for cruise ships. The beaches south of Golfito — Playa Zancudo, Pilon and Pavones — offer excellent surfing.
