Located between the Marais Poitevin known as the Green Venice and the forest, not too far from La Rochelle, our cottage, very comfortable for 4 people ou for 6 (4 adults and 2 children) modernised, the cottage is in a quiet village and makes a comfortable base from which to explore the beautiful Vendée.The house awarded 4 stars for comfort and charm is situated in the quiet village of St Michel le Cloucq, 5 kms from the old capital of Fontenay le Compte, 30 kms from Niort and 50 kms from La Rochelle and the beaches of the Atlantic.
The house is comfortably furnished with antique country furniture and has been restored in keeping with the original style with exposed stone walls and tiled and wood floors.

Area Description: The Vendee is located in the Pays De La Loire in west central France, and its coast stretches along 200km of sandy beaches which makes many tourists flock here especially the resorts Les Sables-d’Olonne, La Tranche-sur-mer.
Another main attraction in Vendee is the Marais Poitevin, a large area of marshland where tourist can boat in traditional boats. The Marais Poitevin is nicked named the Green Venice as the myriad canals are covered in green duckweed and other types of fauna. In the heart of Vendee one can also explore the Puy du Fou which is a historical theme park that re-enacts battle scenes in traditional settings from Gladiators Chariot racing in a replica Amphitheatre to Vikings in a Longboat and much more.

St Michel le Cloucq has a bar/paper shop, an auberge restaurant (a short distance from the house) and a doctor. Several travelling bread and grocery vans come to the village almost every day. There are several good restaurants within a reasonable distance and the owners will be happy to give you a small taste of some of the regional specialities here.
The village is on the edge of a large forest and there are lots of places to walk and cycle. Less than 5 kms from the house is the River Vendée where you can fish and there is good fishing and boating on the canals of Le Marais Poitevin (12 kms). Lac de Chassenon has a beach with supervised swimming.
Fontenay le Compte (5 kms) has good shopping, supermarkets, restaurants and a weekly market.
The Vendee apart from its beauty, is filled with history and fine architecture, notably the Abbaye de Maillezais and the Abbaye Royale in Nieul. Niort (30 kms), set on the River Sèvre, has a castle built by Henry Plantagenet and Richard the Lionheart and some lovely old houses around Rue St-Pierre, as well as an attractive art museum. The great sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are about 50 kms away and you can easily get to the lovely islands of Oléron and Aix just off the coast. Roughly an hour away is Futuroscope, the science and technology park near Poitiers.
