In 1993, I made my first trip to Lithuania, home of my ancestors for many centuries. I knew little of the country and next to nothing about places to stay and ways to get around. With little preparation I made my way there, stayed in a variety of hotels. It was complicated to find my way, especially from lodgings that were out of the way. Before the next visit, I contacted the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, D.C. and quite by chance spoke to someone who kindly mentioned that she knew of a Lithuanian-American who sometimes rented his personal holiday apartment to visitors, a place where she herself had stayed on occasion. I contacted the owner who assured me that it would be possible and promptly sent me information and welcomed me. It was immensely reassuring to think that I might find a place where I could be more at home than previously, a place where I might spend considerable time and be able to return in future years. Since that time I have returned ten times, always staying in Dr. Zmuidzinas's apartment. I am always welcomed by a member of his extended family; the apartment is beautifully prepared with flowers, cheese and bread, fruit and drinks to ease the transition between the long journey and the commencement of exploration in this fascinating country. The apartment is centrally located in the heart of the historic district of Vilnius. The most wonderful part of that location is being able to walk at any time of the day or night to visit friends. The streets are always filled with people. And there is an enormous amount to see. It is a short distance to theatre, the Philharmonic, to historic museums, churches. At times it seems that one is in a stage set; so much is going on in the surrounding streets. At the Cathedral Square, a short walk away, one can witness everything from a giant chess game, the size of two stories of a building, to parades, dance, archaeological exploration ongoing, weddings. Along the way there are wonderful restaurants, computer cafes if you have work to do, flute players, singing groups. If you are after your roots, there are important archival institutions and archivists to assist you. There are daily tours both in Vilnius and throughout the country. Living in an apartment permits one to prepare food more comfortably and less expensively at the same time as one need only walk a few steps away for wonderful inexpensive meals. More than that, it helps one to feel at home. And perhaps the nicest part is to know that if you need something or advice about your stay there, there is always someone to give you a hand. I strongly recommend Dr. Zmuidzinas's apartment. It has served as my excellent headquarters over these nearly fifteen years as I came to know Lithuania, its villages and towns, its people. I had the additional pleasure of bringing my granddaughter with me one year who found our quarters perfectly roomy and comfortable. Professor Myra Sklar - May 8, 2009
