You know a town has a scuba diving addiction when it has its own hyperbaric decompression chamber. Not that you’ll need one while you’re staying at a San Pedro vacation rental. Being next to the largest barrier reef in the Western hemisphere just makes having one seem like the prudent thing to do.

The Belize Barrier Reef harbors so much marine life, one dive spot has been nicknamed The Aquarium. Reef and bull sharks swim among the stalactites in the famous Blue Hole. Sheer vertical walls and swim-throughs bring divers to the Half Moon Caye Wall. The snorkeling and beach combing is just as good as the diving. Don’t forget to set aside some time to visit the Mayan ruins on the mainland. Tour boats leave regularly from San Pedro.
