Victoria isn’t just the official capital of British Columbia. It’s the unofficial capital of the giant playground and retirement destination that Vancouver Island has become. The historic homes and cottages of Victoria have become an attraction in and of themselves. This was once the center of the island’s fishing, timber and other industries, which have now given way to golfing, lounging and shopping. The long history here includes several historical golf courses, such as Victoria Golf Club. Founded in 1893, the course overlooks the Juan de Fuca strait.
There are many great provincial parks on the island, as well as the Pacific Rim National Park. The outdoors within the city limits are just as impressive, however. The Horticulture Centre of the Pacific will inspire your own garden and the lookout on Mount Tolmie offers grand views.
