The rest of New England must be jealous. Western Maine has both mountains and lakes, and sits within one hour of the coast and one of the coolest towns in the region. You get a little bit of everything up here. A vacation rental in Newry, Maine, for example, puts you at the base of the state’s second largest ski resort, Sunday River. Sugarloaf, Saddleback and the New Hampshire ski destinations aren’t far away, either.
In the summer, the multitude of lakes offer sandy beaches and cool, clean waters that can be seen from the porches of rental cabins. Portland and the coast can be reached easily, while Acadia National Park requires just an extra hour’s drive.
While you’re there, try the Moxie soda, a local favorite. Folks seem to either love it or hate it, but its fame has spawned an annual Moxie Festival every July in the town of Bethel.
